SPEAKER: Dr. Eindra Khin Khin

Dr. Virginia Soares de Souza of Brazil, charged with seven counts of murder in 2013 and implicated in over three hundred patient deaths, is the latest in a long line of healthcare professional serial killers who operate under a cloak of invisibility, afforded to them by their sacred profession. The violation of trust and training that occurs when the clinical skills designed to provide comfort, care, and safety are used to harm patients makes serial murder by healthcare professionals a particularly heinous crime.

Dr. Eindra Khin Khin will present a critical analysis of the evidence-based literature to underscore the fact that these healthcare professional serial killers have a far more devastating impact than the general serial killers, due to the greater number of victims made possible by the longer durations of evasion. She'll also examine the methods and victim profiles in these cases, explore the motives underlying these crimes, and review the factors responsible for the long periods of elusion. She'll conclude with red flags to be monitored and practical, systemic safeguards to be implemented in an effort to better detect and deter this particularly dangerous brand of serial killers.

Dr. Khin is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences. She received her medical degree from University of Virginia School of Medicine and completed her internship and residency in general psychiatry at George Washington University Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident. Following residency, she completed a fellowship in forensic psychiatry at Georgetown University Hospital. Dr. Khin Khin is board certified in general and forensic psychiatry. She is currently working on a Master of Public Health degree in Global Health at George Washington University School of Health and Health Sciences.

Dr. Khin Khin currently serves as the Director of Forensic Psychiatry Services and the Associate Director of Psychiatry Residency Training Program at the George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, DC. She has held many clinical and didactic teaching responsibilities for both medical students and residents in general and forensic psychiatry, as well as global mental health and cross-cultural psychiatry.
